And I guess this is sort of a sister appreciation post.
Last year my sister left home in NZ to fly over to Australia for uni. Obviously it was quite strange at first, having grown up together, and from being around each other 24/7 to living in different countries. But now this makes us appreciate each other more and when we finally get to see each other I am much more grateful.
A few months after she moved, I received a surprise in the mail. A post card.
Obviously I was touched (and to be honest, didn't even think that we could be this cute), and silently laughed to myself as I knew this took weeks to arrive and then I just instantly went on messenger to talk to her. But because all along we could have just chatted live so easily, by just putting in the effort of buying the postcard, writing it up and mailing it, this was so special.
Ever since then, I have received more cute messages on pretty postcards and every time they come it's just so exciting. She even sent me a gift one time - a pair of earrings I really wanted, but funny story, I actually bet her to it and bought myself the pair just after she posted it in the mail. And then we both realised. But now I have two pairs! haha
What I'm trying to say is the joy and excitement of giving and receiving hand-written letters has faded. Even just the little things, such as how common pen pals were, and how passing notes in class has converted to texting now. But I think we should be putting in the effort of sending mail in the post every now and then.
So get out a pen and paper, and start writing. Whether it's to friends or family, overseas or down the road, the receiver will sure be surprised but ever so happy.
And to my sister, if you're reading this, I'm sending lots of love and virtual hugs!
xx
Hannah
