How I Style a Tartan Flannel

To be honest, when I first saw people wearing a flannel I thought it’d be a trend I’d miss. I mean, these are basically just button up shirts in the same pattern as my school uniform. However reading other people’s blogs and learning how many different patterns and colours flannels come in as well as the endless ways to style it, I was persuaded to buy one of my own.

There are so many different ways to style a flannel, but I have four favourites.

1. Open

2. Buttoned up

3. Layered

4. Tied

The style shown in these photos are open. Whether you’re just cold or you want to add a splash of colour to your outfit, flannels are great. As you can see in the photos the whole outfit is black and so adding a red and navy flannel breaks it up and adds colour to the outfit. If you’re feeling just a bit chilly, throw on a flannel.

Buttoning up your flannel can also be a really cool look. I wouldn’t button it up all the way but would leave the first two or three buttons undone. On lazy days I wear a singlet underneath (I prefer black or grey singlets), a pair of jeans or shorts and that’s a complete outfit.

Layering is so fun to experiment with, and nothing is better than that cosy feeling under all the layers in winter. I like flannels to layer as I find most things that I layer with will be monochrome. Underneath parkas, hoodies, coats - all are great!

Tying a flannel is perfect for summer nights. In NZ, even in summer it gets quite chilly at night so having a casual outfit like a grey tee and shorts with a flannel around your waist is both stylish and practical. It looks really put together and I know that people even purposely tie flannels around their waist. At night, you can simply put it on and you are instantly warm!
